Texas Skunkatude

In Texas, if a driver ran over a wild animal on a country road, I bet he might say something like, ‘Aw, shucks!  That was bad … I hope it’s not on my truck.’

Actually, white truck.  Everyone in Texas owns at least one white truck.

If this is Lake Bardwell, it must be winter

It was a loooong, long trip from Alabama to here.  Wheres ‘here’?  Lake Bardwell, a reservoir in north/central Texas, managed by the Corps of Engineers.  We came here to volunteer at one of their campgrounds for the winter.  Yeah, yeah, winter doesn’t start in August … just go with the flow, here, okay?

If you are not familiar with campground volunteering, a volunteer is provided a camp site and utilities in return for working about 20 hours  a week.  It’s profitable for the worker and the campground … and it’s a whole lot of fun.

There are great days … and then there are not so great days.

Sunday was a long, long day.  Mac put the scooters back on daBus, getting ready for travel to Texas.  About 3 hours later, fortunately in a parking lot, we noticed my scooter (the one on the outside) was laying at a 90 degree angle!  Straps held the scoots upright.  We went over a bump that jarred daBus – and obviously broke one of the handles – causing a strap to slip.

The scoot was still attached by one strap and one bungy cord.  The scoot must have bounced off the road because the handles are tilted at an odd angle.

I guess I know what we’ll be looking for in Texas … know of a good scooter repair shop in the Ennis, TX area?

Bummers

Barooooom! We’re moving!

We finally got the scooters up and running and we’re moving … we’re moving!

We road the scooters on back roads until I’m more comfortable (and get my motorcycle license).  It was soooo cold! We wore sweatshirts under our jackets … it may have been 58 degrees but the windchill was 45. Last night, the temperature was 27 and da’Bus had a hard time staying warm.  We put 3 blankets on the bed.  Tomorrow?  It’ll be 70, and continue to rise each day through next week.  Goody, goody.

Finally warm …

We’re in Cedar Key, Florida, basking in the winter sun.  It really is very nice … the temperature is 78 and the sun is shining.  Have no idea what to expect of the rest of Januaury through April weather in Florida … this is our first day here.

We spent Christmas week in Warrior, Alabama with our daughter and her family.  Kevin, the oldest child, was home for the holidays.  He came back from South Korea in November and is now stationed at Ft. Hood.  He has grown into a remarkable young man in the last 2 years … a very good man.

Our scooters rode off the back of da’Bus all the way to Florida without any issues!  How about that!  We’ll take them off the bus tomorrow.  By accident, a campground road, just 30 feet from behind our bus, is a 2-mile, paved road that just stops at the end.  Lots and lots of people have been riding it today on ATV’s and 4-wheelers.  The campground manager suggested I use that road to practice riding my scooter since I still have to get my motorcycle license when my leg heals.

I don’t know about that knee … surgery was 7 weeks ago and I can only bend it 90 degrees … have no idea how I’ll get it to bend more in another month.

Hope you had a wonderful holiday and are now ready to get back into your normal routine – there’s comfort in “normal”.
